The pagan whoosh on “Parplar,” Larkin Grimm’s third solo record, sounds like it was conjured by shamans.
Maybe it was.
Grimm, who grew up in a commune, can convincingly deliver lyrics like “drinking my eyes.” She says Old Soul Studio, the Catskill, N.Y., mansion where “Parplar” was cut, is haunted by “pirates and prostitutes.”
“We tried to accommodate them as much as we could within the recording,” Grimm says
The 26-year-old Grimm is eccentric and incandescent.
In addition to commanding a witchy singing voice throughout “Parplar,” the Memphis native plays her share of instruments.
On “My Justine,” a zither evokes Oriental icicles. The title track’s galactic beeps were done on a busted Casio, and caravan percussion heightens “Ride That Cyclone.”
“My dad owns a music store in Dahlonega, Ga., and I grew up in that shop,” Grimm says. “So now when I’m trying to write a song I try and find a new instrument to inspire me.”
Released on Young God Records, “Parplar” recalls Devendra Banhart’s primal folk.
“People hear my voice and want me to make beautiful music,” Grimm says. “But I want to make groundbreaking, wild music. (Young God owner/producer) Michael Gira found me and was like, ‘You’re dark and crazy, and can I work with you?”
Catch Larkin Grimm at 4 p.m. March 25 at Earshot Music. The show is free.

Providence, R.I.'s HOWL return to Greenville! Howl is an amazing heavy metal band whose sound is similar to early Mastodon/Baroness with some Entombed and Slayer thrown in. They are one of the most promising new metal bands touring today! "If you put chips down on young metal bands, bet big on Howl: A Providence four-piece with a sprawling, scabrous three-track debut EP and a stage set screaming with twin-guitar leads and thematic shifts nodding to U.S. black metal, Howl is the Baroness of the North Woods. See them now." GRIDS from Charlotte, NC will open.
Show is March 14th, 10pm at Earshot. All Ages $5.
