EAST NORTH TO PLAY FREE SHOW AT EARSHOT

LOCAL POST-PROG-INSTRUMENTAL QUARTET EAST NORTH TO PLAY AT EARSHOT 9/18 7pm
.. Pulling influences from Post-Rock bands like Explosions in the Sky and Mogwai, East North pursues inspirational instrumental music with a clever nod towards Prog-Rock. Imagine the strong musical imagery of Godspeed You! Black Emperor melting with the progressive tendencies of Yes. Formed nearly two years ago, East North spent much time scrutinizing every note of their songs to make sure that nothing would come off as cliché or insincere. With everyone pushed to the edge of their musical ability, Chas Whitmire (guitar), Drew Mashburn (guitar), Matt Mashburn (bass), and Christopher Morris (drums) still manage to put a lot showmanship into their performances while maintaining sonic integrity. If you like Post-Rock, but are looking for something new, you need to hear or see East North.

GRAVES OF VALOR IN-STORE & CD RELEASE PARTY!

Sorry folks! We've been doing most of our short updates through TWITTER, so that's why this guys is getting neglected. We have great news! Relapse's Graves of Valor will perform for free and have a release party for their new cd "Salarian Gate" at Earshot on Friday May 29th at 8pm! Here is a tiny bio of Graves of Valor:
GRAVES OF VALOR (ex-Through the Eyes of the Dead) explode to the forefront of the modern extreme metal scene with their Relapse debut ‘Salarian Gate’. The quintet’s razor-sharp attack melds a traditional metal spirit with 21st century extremity to establish GRAVES OF VALOR as one of the most promising new death metal bands in years. As songs such as “Locusta”, “Pestilence”, and the title track prove, ‘Salarian Gate’ is a massive debut and one of the best death metal albums of 2009.

New INDIE EXCLUSIVES in today!

SCOTT MILLER "FOR CRYING OUT LOUD" CD $13.99
Our distributor was out of this for a while, but have plenty in now and they are ready for the taking! Singer/songwriter/roots rock. Jointly produced by Michael Webb and Doug Lanceo. New original songs. Last studio release in 2006. Guest artists: Patty Griffin, Doug Lanceo, Tim O'Brien. Was lucky enough to see him at the CIMS convention in Nasheville and he wowed the crowd.

BONNIE 'PRINCE' BILLY/CHEYENNE MIZE "AMONG THE GOLD" 10" $11.99/DIGITAL DOWNLOAD
"Cheyenne Mize plays fiddle in Louisville's folk Collective Arnett Hollow. Bonnie "Prince" Billy creates his own world of music that many describe as Roots, country, indie rock, or just a mix of all. The duets release is culled from music written between 1873, and 1915. The music has a timeless sound to it, and their performances are excellent. I think choosing duets, and standards has allowed these performers to really open themselves as perfomers." There is no cd version that I know of but you can download this from our digital download store for a mere $6.66 visit us at earshot.thinkindie.com

FREAK FOLK FROM A WITCHY WOMAN

LARKIN GRIMM FREE SHOW MARCH 25, 4PM EARSHOT
By Matt Wake
Metromix
March 23, 2009

The pagan whoosh on “Parplar,” Larkin Grimm’s third solo record, sounds like it was conjured by shamans.
Maybe it was.

Grimm, who grew up in a commune, can convincingly deliver lyrics like “drinking my eyes.” She says Old Soul Studio, the Catskill, N.Y., mansion where “Parplar” was cut, is haunted by “pirates and prostitutes.”

“We tried to accommodate them as much as we could within the recording,” Grimm says

The 26-year-old Grimm is eccentric and incandescent.

In addition to commanding a witchy singing voice throughout “Parplar,” the Memphis native plays her share of instruments.
On “My Justine,” a zither evokes Oriental icicles. The title track’s galactic beeps were done on a busted Casio, and caravan percussion heightens “Ride That Cyclone.”

“My dad owns a music store in Dahlonega, Ga., and I grew up in that shop,” Grimm says. “So now when I’m trying to write a song I try and find a new instrument to inspire me.”

Released on Young God Records, “Parplar” recalls Devendra Banhart’s primal folk.

“People hear my voice and want me to make beautiful music,” Grimm says. “But I want to make groundbreaking, wild music. (Young God owner/producer) Michael Gira found me and was like, ‘You’re dark and crazy, and can I work with you?”

Catch Larkin Grimm at 4 p.m. March 25 at Earshot Music. The show is free.

HOWL show this weekend! Larkin Grimm and more!

Providence, R.I.'s HOWL return to Greenville! Howl is an amazing heavy metal band whose sound is similar to early Mastodon/Baroness with some Entombed and Slayer thrown in. They are one of the most promising new metal bands touring today! "If you put chips down on young metal bands, bet big on Howl: A Providence four-piece with a sprawling, scabrous three-track debut EP and a stage set screaming with twin-guitar leads and thematic shifts nodding to U.S. black metal, Howl is the Baroness of the North Woods. See them now." GRIDS from Charlotte, NC will open.
Show is March 14th, 10pm at Earshot. All Ages $5.

JUST ANNOUNCED!

LARKIN GRIMM TO PERFORM FREE SHOW AT EARSHOT WEDNESDAY MARCH 25, 2009
more details soon, until then read her bio from the
YOUNG GOD RECORDS website

Larkin Grimm was born 26 years ago in Memphis TN to hippie devotees of the religious cult The Holy Order Of MANS - her parents were runaway kids that met in San Francisco in the late 60’s and eventually found their way into the cult, which later moved to Memphis. Larkin spent her early years in this communal environment, raised by several parents at once. When the cult disbanded Larkin was 6, and her nuclear family moved to the Blue Ridge Mountains in Georgia and quickly grew to include 5 siblings. Larkin says she ran wild in the mountains and was “raised by the family dog.” Larkin got the taste of music in her from her fiddler and singer father and her folksinger mother. She dropped out of school at 10 and didn’t return until 12. At 13 she was sent to boarding school (courtesy of Georgia’s Coca Cola, which funds the school with the intent of helping gifted Appalachian children). Larkin excelled, (though her erupting hormones and wild imagination were already roaring) and she won a full scholarship to Yale to study art. She spent a while there then freaked out at the elitism of the place. She left and returned several times, somehow along the way managing to find herself in Thailand, where she studied Thai healing massage and “befriended strippers and watched them being humiliated and abused by sex tourists”, bummed around Guatemala, and also hitchhiked around southern Alaska by herself, until she found a place “so beautiful I couldn’t leave, camped out there in my tent for about 2 months with the plan to starve to death, get eaten, or get enlightened.” Larkin says a Cherokee shaman named Jezebel Crow found her on the mountaintop and lured her to her truck with the promise of maple syrup and sausages. She became her “first great teacher, initiating me into the shamanic practice of using natural hallucinogens to gain spiritual wisdom. On one such trip, I got my first jolt of golden light to the brain and was possessed by a forest spirit who taught me to sing.” Jezebel drove her down to her commune in Olympia, Washington, where she would live off and on for a few years, soon hanging out with “eco-warriors, vagabonds, sexual deviants and various other miscreants.” But Jezebel encouraged Larkin to go back to Yale and when she returned Larkin started incorporating singing into her art practice, which led her finally to decide to become “a real musician”.

Back at Yale for the last time (eventually “graduating” with one credit left to go) Larkin met Dave Longstreth and became a member of Dirty Projectors for a time. When she left that band she joined up with the Providence RI Noise/Art scene, and was active in arranging gigs and festivals there, as well as working on her own music. Larkin soon made 3 self-recorded albums of freeform, improvisational songs (or “acoustic noise” as she calls it), 2 of which were released by Secret Eye (Harpoon, and The Last Tree). She books her own tours, travels constantly, and has by her own force of will, itinerant nature, and sense of reckless adventure managed to build a supportive network of friends and fans around Europe and the US/Canada. Larkin has shared bills with Devendra Banhart, Spires that in the Sunset Rise, Espers, Mi and L'au, Brightblack Morning Light, Entrance, Viking Moses, the Microphones, and Old Time Relijun. She has no permanent address (and doesn’t want one), but in the warm summer months can usually be found living in a tent in the woods.
